BAGNAULT set in the Deux Sevres of the Poitou Charente is
said to be the second sunniest area in France after the Cote d'Azure ... but is so much closer and easier to get to from the
Channel coast!
From this area there is easy access to the fantastic
Atlantic port of La Rochelle with its fabulous harbour surrounded by many excellent sea food restaurants, great shopping and
Aquarium. The Ile de Re is also very well worth a visit for beautiful unspoilt beaches and the chic and fashionable harbour
towns of St Martin and La Flotte. Both towns have a great deal of historic interest from Royalist France through to Napoleon
and the First Republic ... as well as being well served by every type of restaurant, from gourmet to fast food!
Visit the Marais Poitevin for lovely scenery and a gentle day of punting on the
many canals.
Poitiers for historic and artistic interest, boutiques
and the famous theme park for the moving image - Futuroscope.
There
is a fantastic local market at Niort on Saturday morning which can be followed by lunch in one of the many restaurants and
a visit to the Donjon or walk along the beautiful river.
Famous
for Pineau des Charentes, the delightful aperitif; tastings are available at the many local producers.
The lovely town of Cognac is just under an hour away for an interesting day out
and a tour around one of the many distilleries ... Remy Martin, Hennessy or even some of the lesser known and more obscure
brands!
The Tumulus de Bourgon, 2000 years older than the Pyramids
in Egypt, and its Neolithic Museum is just a few miles away. There is an interesting visitor centre on the site, ancient buildings
and barns and a diorama showing the whole of the Deux Sevres area with the tumulus as its centre point.
