Bagnault is centred on the old route of the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela in Spain and was thus a major overnight stopover point for the travellers. The fountains which still abound in the village -- and are clearly signposted -- were built to sustain the travellers on their journey down through France.

The Knights Templar were active in the region guarding the pilgrims against bandits and thieves and ensuring their safety on this leg of their journey to Spain. Many of the buildings in the village originate from the hostels in which the pilgrims stayed overnight. An area indeed rich in medieval history!
